Mini Review: Sprawl Zero (PS5) - A Fun Blast of PS2 Shooter Nostalgia

Push Square reportedly describes Sprawl Zero as a “lovely hit of shooter nostalgia” in its PS5 review, presenting MAETH’s first-person shooter as a deliberate return to the design language of early-2000s console games.

The review characterizes Sprawl Zero as a Y2K tactical shooter influenced by classics such as Halo and F.E.A.R. Push Square also highlights the game’s de-rezzed visual style, which the publication says would not look out of place on a PS2.

That retro identity is backed by the game’s official positioning. The US PlayStation Store listing describes Sprawl Zero as a Y2K FPS inspired by 2000s console shooters, with multiple routes, verticality, gravity-based combat and more than 40 weapons.

Push Square reports that the roughly 10-hour campaign follows a linear path from one combat encounter to the next. Its review also points to deflecting shields, bullet-time abilities and Gravity Gloves that can throw objects at enemies or pull weapons into the player’s hands.

Weapons are built around a deliberately aggressive rhythm. According to Push Square, each gun carries a single magazine, encouraging players to fire until it is empty, throw the weapon at an enemy and use gravity to bring another gun into their grip.

The publication’s positive assessment is not without qualifications. Push Square reportedly describes some environments as repetitive and notes several instances of backtracking, although it argues that those issues are less damaging because the campaign does not overstay its welcome.

Sprawl Zero is being developed by independent studio MAETH and published by Kwalee. A publisher-distributed announcement says the game stars FIVE, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, and is scheduled to launch on September 8, 2026 for PlayStation 5, PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.

The PlayStation Store page confirms support for DualSense vibration and trigger effects, but it currently lists the release date as “to be determined.” No verified information was supplied about the PS5 version’s resolution, frame rate, loading times, graphics options, price or region-specific release timing.

For PlayStation players interested in a compact throwback rather than a large modern campaign, Push Square’s assessment suggests that Sprawl Zero’s appeal will depend on how much its weapon juggling, linear structure and deliberately dated presentation match their appetite for Y2K shooter nostalgia. The review’s praise and criticisms remain Push Square’s opinions, not independently verified performance findings.
